Sooner or later, our spiritual journey will open to a curious paradox: many, if not all, of the great contemplative wisdom traditions assert that the fundamental problem we have with the world is our “sense of self” that has a problem with the world. We are told: the illness and its cure both lie within.
Perhaps — stranger still — is the very fact that when we undertake a sustained exploration to find the “sense of self,” we find that it vanishes. Through various forms of meditation, the “sense of self” is revealed to be nothing more than a feeling — a feeling that literally vanishes whenever we attempt to locate it.
Experiencing, firsthand, this illusory feeling is an essential realization at the heart of spiritual awakening. Like waking up from a nightmare and feeling the relief of realizing it was just a dream, there is a definitive point to seeing how the “sense of self” vanishes under scrutiny.
